In the era of Suharto, Indonesian farmers contribute the food world


Indonesian farmers, in the era of the leadership of President  Suharto, called able to provide food aid to the starving population of the world. This incident occurred when Indonesia achieved self-sufficiency in mid 1984. Excerpted from autobiographical book 'Suharto: Thoughts, Words and Actions I', Suharto Indonesia revealed that farmers provide assistance and voluntary mutual help of 100,000 tons of grain to the world's poor farmers. According to Suharto, Indonesian farmers asked surrender of grain to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to then be forwarded to the brothers with families who suffer from hunger in various areas, especially in the African continent. Soeharto expressed his delight at the achievements and hard work of farmers in support of his food self-sufficiency program. Soeharto stated, before self-sufficient, Indonesia is importing rice which is quite large at around 2 million tonnes per year. "It was not a miracle. It is the hard work of our entire nation, which carried resilient according to a development plan that is realistic without losing ideals the future, "he said. FAO Director-General Edouard Saouma, in 1986, pays tribute to Indonesia to commemorate Indonesia's success in agriculture, particularly in achieving food self-sufficiency.

 The award was marked by a medallion on one side bearing the faces of Soeharto and on the other side a picture of a farmer planting rice with the words 'From Rice Importer to Self-Sufficiency'. Soeharto decided to sell the medal made ​​of gold, silver, and bronze and the results will be used to help countries hunger, as well as finance the activities of FAO and the countries which require assistance of FAO.
